The Barrels Ale House, Berwick-Upon-Tweed

View Larger Map The pub was surrounded by scaffolding and swathed in the sort of blue mesh fabric that responsible builders put up these days – fortunately whatever work was going on was confined to the exterior. Once inside there’s a relatively peaceful scene, but then the oddness hits you: as well as being a pub with good beer, plenty of character and a friendly atmosphere, this is a pub that relishes eccentricity. Looking around, I could see one or two items of normal furniture, but most of the stools…

Tell us a bit about your brewery. XT started in 2011 to make eXTremely tasty beers with a modern twist. How long have you been brewing for? I have been brewing at XT since 2011, I was very lucky to serve my apprenticeship in another great local microbrewery before that. How did you get into brewing? Did you homebrew? I’ve had a love of beer and brewing all my adult life, and have homebrewed nearly as long. Who/what inspired you to be a brewer? I lived in the US and…

Tell us a bit about your brewery. Founded in 1850 by Dr William Okell, who pioneered ‘steam brewing’. Okells moved to its present site in 1994 with a brew length of 60 brls but capable of doing a 20 brl brew. We started exporting successfully to the UK around 5 years ago – UK sales account for around 35% of production now. How long have you been brewing for? I started brewing immediately after University in 1974. How did you get into brewing? Did you homebrew? I did a B.Sc…

Bad King John by Ridgeway Brewing

There is an old style tapestry design on the front of the bottle portraying two knights jousting and on the back there appears to be a medieval wench being hanged. Charming. Nice olde English design though – very apt given the name of the brew. The beer has quite a sweet, malty nose and it pours very dark. Not quite a jet black standard stout colour but not far off. For a bottle conditioned ale I expected Bad King John to retain a nice head but within a minute or…

Tell us a bit about your brewery. TicketyBrew is a 330ml bottle-only brewery producing domestic beer to sit alongside the plethora of imported beer that’s on offer. How did you get into brewing? Did you homebrew? Lots of hands-on brewing in a small flat and a lot of reading. My friends…

Marble Brewery Ginger 1888 Stout

I’ve long been a fan of beers with a hint of ginger about them and so I was keen to try this one. Until this point, most of these beers with ginger (I’m deliberately avoiding referring to them as ginger beers to avoid any confusion) have been paler entities along the lines of Marble’s own Ginger Marble and the somewhat stronger Ginger 6, or the rather lovely Hardknott Cool Fusion, and I can’t remember having ever sampled a ginger stout before. These paler beers leave a lovely fresh lingering ginger…

Tell us a bit about your brewery. Hackney Brewery is a small micro based in Hackney, London. It was established in 2011 by Jon Swain, and myself, Peter Hills. Jon’s in his late-20s and I’m in my mid-30s. We met nearly 10 years ago while working at The Eagle pub on Farringdon Road (the first gastropub according to folklore) and have worked on and off together since then. How long have you been brewing for? Our first commercial beers went out mid-2012. How did you get into brewing? Did you…

Interview with Ben Marston, Tring Brewery

Posted on 18/04/2013, in Meet The Brewer, with 4 Comments

Tell us a bit about your brewery… How long have you been brewing for? The brewery has been producing beer since 1992 when the range consisted of just a couple of beers. One of them is still available today (of course not from that first batch). We originally started out using an 8 barrel kit that was decommissioned (read as almost self destructed), prior to the move to a new 30 barrel site in 2010. How did you get into brewing? Did you homebrew? Fate, if you believe in such…

Tatton Brewery Blonde

I decided to try out the swanky new real ale emporium in Chester having read about it in a local CAMRA mag which lead me to the Brunning and Price pub, The Architect. Never having set foot in the place before I quickly scanned the pump clips and decided on a pint of the Blonde by Tatton Brewery. The other Tatton brews have always been pretty good (in particular the honey based brew “Lazy Haze”) so I had high hopes for this. The barman seemed to have a nice wrist…
