Posted on 26/04/2013, in Meet The Brewer, with 1 Comment

Tell us a bit about your brewery. TicketyBrew is a 330ml bottle-only brewery producing domestic beer to sit alongside the plethora of imported beer that’s on offer. We love trying beer from all over the world and we want to offer a British alternative to some of the classic styles. How long have you been brewing for? We’ve only been up and running for 2 months. How did you get into brewing? Did you homebrew? Lots of hands-on brewing in a small flat and a lot of reading. My friends…

Marble Brewery Ginger 1888 Stout

I’ve long been a fan of beers with a hint of ginger about them and so I was keen to try this one. Until this point, most of these beers with ginger (I’m deliberately avoiding referring to them as ginger beers to avoid any confusion) have been paler entities along the lines of Marble’s own Ginger Marble and the somewhat stronger Ginger 6, or the rather lovely Hardknott Cool Fusion, and I can’t remember having ever sampled a ginger stout before. These paler beers leave a lovely fresh lingering ginger…

Posted on 18/04/2013, in Meet The Brewer, with 1 Comment

Tell us a bit about your brewery. Hackney Brewery is a small micro based in Hackney, London. It was established in 2011 by Jon Swain, and myself, Peter Hills. Jon’s in his late-20s and I’m in my mid-30s. We met nearly 10 years ago while working at The Eagle pub on Farringdon Road (the first gastropub according to folklore) and have worked on and off together since then. How long have you been brewing for? Our first commercial beers went out mid-2012. How did you get into brewing? Did you…

Interview with Ben Marston, Tring Brewery

Posted on 18/04/2013, in Meet The Brewer, with 4 Comments

Tell us a bit about your brewery… How long have you been brewing for? The brewery has been producing beer since 1992 when the range consisted of just a couple of beers. One of them is still available today (of course not from that first batch). We originally started out using an 8 barrel kit that was decommissioned (read as almost self destructed), prior to the move to a new 30 barrel site in 2010. How did you get into brewing? Did you homebrew? Fate, if you believe in such…

Sierra Nevada Narwhal Imperial Stout

Taking its name from a peculiar species of tusked Arctic whale that survives the pitch-black depths of upto (or rather down to) 1500 metres, Narwhal Imperial Stout from California’s Sierra Nevada Brewing Co is a deliciously dark, tremendously rich and unbelievably complex Russian Imperial Stout. Pouring into the suggested ‘snifter’ glass a thick, viscous oil-slick black with a head reminiscent of a perfect espresso coffee shot, this is a beer that grabbed my attention from the outset – it actually looked like it was going to be well worth drinking…

The Magnet Freehouse, Stockport

Posted on 08/11/2012, in Cheshire, Real Ale Pub Reviews, with 0 Comments

I popped into The Magnet for a quick pint shortly after it opened in November 2009 and have been a regular visitor ever since. From the outset it was quite simply streets ahead of anything else in the area in terms of range, quality and value – and this is an area already sporting a couple of very decent local real ale emporia. When it first opened, it was still very much a work in progress and the owners have continued to improve, extend and generally beautify it ever since….
